Disneyland is one of my favorite places to unwind. No matter how stressed out I am the second I walk in the gates I can forget all my woes and just enjoy my surroundings. And though I love the park now the park as it was in the early days is what captures my imagination even more. One of my favorite attractions was the live action Disney mermaids. During the summers of 1965 through 1967, Disneyland's Submarine Voyage lagoon housed real live mermaids. The ladies donned tails, frolicked, and sunbathed for about 4 hours each day. There is a video on youtube of them swimming and waving through the sub's portholes as you passed. I can only imagine just how excited the little kids were who witnessed this. This blog even has try-outs for the position in the mid 1960's.
